What is S.T.E.M. Goes Red?
Go Red for Women in Delaware has embarked on a mission to draw young women and girls into the world of S.T.E.M. at a one-day event on Tuesday, March 19th, 2019 at Dover Downs Hotel and Conference Center. This one-day event will align directly with the Southern Delaware Go Red for Women Luncheon on Wednesday, March 20th, 2019 at the same location.
Even though heart disease remains the leading killer of women today, there is an extremely low representation of women working in the field of cardiology; only 16% of cardiologists are women. This leaves us vulnerable to: missing female-specific early warning signs, underdeveloped treatment plans, and a lack of new prevention methods. The American Heart Association considers it in the best interest of our shared communities to change the statistics of women in science. The S.T.E.M. Powered initiative will elevate tomorrow’s female leaders to drive groundbreaking innovation through science, technology, engineering, and mathematics for improved heart and brain health and equal representation for all demographics. Additionally, by changing the statistics we enhance opportunities for children in Delaware, making them strong contributors to our state and communities.
“Go Red has always been about empowering women. Empowering them to take charge of their health, to advocate for themselves, and to take ownership of their wellbeing. Go Red Goes STEM aims to empower these young girls to take charge – of their health, of their passions, and of their future professions. Some of them may end up being surgeons or neuroscientists to make the very breakthroughs the AHA is currently working to find; but all of them will leave this event knowing that they have the power to pursue their passions.” ~ Jennifer Cohan, Chair of the 2019 STEM Goes Red Event
We invite our community leaders and businesses to play a part in this important endeavor through sponsorship and engagement. This event will reach many middle-school students throughout Delaware who wouldn’t normally see themselves in S.T.E.M. careers.
